Programs at the Health Science Education Center

Clarion HSEC adminstrates several statewide youth-oriented programs:

Project XProject X is a school assembly anti-tobacco program aimed at students in grades 4-7. Project X is a “Matrix” style presentation encouraging student interaction, providing information on the harmful and powerful drug, tobacco. Project X offers a comprehensive school-based health education curriculum using an interactive style geared toward large groups of students providing ideas and opinions to help discover the truth about tobacco products. The program is delivered by a health educator in the role of Special Agent Goodman from “The Agency.” Using various decision-making exercises, students will assist the Special Agent in keeping the school tobacco free.

Leadership Academy

The Leadership Academy program, the first phase of which was completed during the 2006-7 school year, targets minority students from specific school districts across the state. The program promotes leadership skills in students, decision-making in leaders, career choices, team building, and problem solving. Acceptance into the Academy is based on student desire to attend, recommendations from teachers and/or counselors, and parental permission. Our staff works closely with school districts to recruit and meet with interested students, inform parents, and plan the academy program prior to students' arrival. Comprised of approximately 35-50 youth, programs are held over two and half days on Clarion University’s campus and include presenters from HSEC Staff, Clarion University faculty, leaders from the community, government, and business, as well as peers and national known individuals. Free of charge, participants are housed on the Clarion campus separate from University students. As an incentive to focus on future goals, Leadership Academy participants are automatically accepted at Clarion University upon graduation.
